A Father's Gift

Greetings, all..... new to this particular forum, active on some others. Need some opinions, and I know there are plenty out there so feel free to share.

My two sons are both grown now, living the good life near Naples, Florida. Like many young men, they are struggling a bit in this economy but they stay out of trouble and work hard..... so I wanted to get them something special for Christmas this year. I figure nothing says "love" like a new rifle. They are 28 and 24 years old.

They've grown up around firearms, but never really had any of their own (just my hand-me-downs), so I talked it over with Santa and we've decided that a pair of custom 10/22 rifles was just the ticket.

I considered handguns but opted for something simple and rugged in the hope that they might, someday, pass it down to their future offspring.

I've got a pair of basic 10/22's in hand, and this weekend will swap out the stock furniture for Hogue over-molded rubber stocks. The scope mount rails are installed (yes, with blue Loc-Tite), and the wife is buying a pair of Vortex Red Dot scopes for them.

They'll each get an ammo box full of ammunition to open first, then we'll bust out the cased rifles. This will be a total surprise for them both - they have no idea this is coming.

Can y'all think of anything else that might compliment their gift package ? And, no - I won't adopt you.

How about cleaning gear (PatchWorm/bore-snake) or a decent cable-lock or extra magazines?

One other idea might be to register for an Appleseed shoot.... Other than that there are tons of ideas on mods for 10/22 That and making time to get to the range for a little target practice together.

Magazines... You can get them each two extra 10rd factory mags or maybe some 30rd mags. There are larger mags, but those become a little excessive. Besides ammo and the rifle, mags are your best stocking stuffers to complement your main gift, IMO.

I have found the Butler Creek Steel Lips to be the best, affordable, longest lasting hi-cap mags for the 10/22 platform. They will far oulast the hot lips versions.

Look into getting a hammer that reduces the trigger pull. The 10/22 from the factory is an EXCELLENT rifle. The most common complaint that many people have however is the trigger pull being rather high.

The trigger has a "snap" when it releases which can be an irritation to some, a factor that doesn't make the rifle as accurate as it can be for others. Either way this hammer makes the rifle feel SO much more "user friendly" and smooth when it operates.

You can go way overboard and spend lots of dough on all the mods offered for the 10/22. Trigger jobs can get technical and expensive. This hammer makes a huge difference at a VERY reasonable price. This is one of those "almost too good to be true" units.

I would also look into a good buffer. It reduces the "clack" of steel hitting steel and softens the feel of the rifle operation.

I only recently upgraded my 25 year old, all factory 10/22, with the volquartsen hammer and a buffer. I wish I had done it a long time ago.

The rifle is dead on accurate out to 300' within 1.5" with iron sites. The hammer and buffer won't make it anymore accurate, unless the factory trigger is causing the operator to jerk the rifle.

Seems like extra magazines are right up there on most everyone's list, so I think I'll start there.

Once they get their presents broke in, I'll suggest some possible mods and aftermarket stuff they might want to add.

Come on down, the weather's great! I live in the Naples area too and your son's are right, the economy is in full disaster so we depend on all the tourist dollars we can get.

You're a really good dad to be getting your son's the 10/22 for Christmas, they'll get many years of pleasure from them. We have a pair of 10/22's here in our household as well, a standard model from 1969 and a stainless steel "All-Weather" from 2007. Both are great shooters. They both seem to perform well with the Federal 550 Bulk Pack ammo from Walmart. We have Simmons 3 X 9 Scopes on them with Weaver See-Thru mounts, but beyond that we haven't really modified them.

+1 on the Butler Creek "Steel Lips" hi-cap. magazines. They are are the only real reliable ones that are cost effective. The "Hot Lips" brand also made by Butler Creek are not as good. They work ok for some people but not at all for others. You get what you pay for.

Midway USA usually has a sale going on Ruger brand 10-shot mag's for around $10-$12 each. They're always reliable.

Good luck and have a nice visit in Naples while your down for Christmas.

The only bad thing around here is that the gun range is over 50 miles away.

To dove tail the sling and Appleseed suggestions, I suggest a GI web sling. You can find them for about $10-15, they're quite durable, and best of all they allow you to use the arm loop for better target shooting. A lot of the slings I see in stores (while probably more comfortable with the neoprene pads and such) don't have the loop option.

The only hitch here is that standard 10/22 stocks don't have sling mounts, but with a wood stock, you can add them pretty easily (just make sure to use a Dremel to drill the holes . . . my drill couldn't get the job done, but the Dremel went right through it, though smoked quite a bit

).

FWIW, that's a great gift for your sons. I'll never forget when, after I finally got set up after school in a different city, my Father gave me his old service revolver.

Not that you need any further encouragement on your choice of gift, but thought this story might be a bit on topic. A friend of mine who evacuated before Katrina, like most figuring it'd be only a few days, rushed back ASAP, knowing he'd have no electricity or water; not because he was worried about his house (it didn't flood), but because he'd left a 22 rifle his Dad had given him at his house and was worried looters would get it.

Months later, after I learned about the Katrina gun confiscations, I showed him the NRA/youtube clip that included another friend of mine who'd gone in and was stopped while heading back out (the roadblock was part of the "look-and-leave" policy). The criminal-cops asked him what was in the trunk, he told them, and they took it. Upon seeing this, the first friend got this grave look, and said very slowly, and seriously, "they'd have had to kill me." He's not any big-time 2A person. His reaction was because it was the rifle his Dad had given him.

Mothers and daughters have that whole wedding-dress gift, but it pales in comparison, in sentiment and practicality, to the Father-Son firearm gift. Merry Christmas.

Definitely go for the buffers....tuffer buffers are usually on 3 for 1 deals on ebay. Boresnakes are also good ideas, teach them to keep em clean, though 10/22's are pretty low maintenance. Mags are always good, I have a preference towards the steel lips mags, or factory mags and the three mag joiners. That triple factory mag hook up is my favorite.

@ Snake Driver : That was my thinking, exactly. I'm compiling a list of all the suggestions and web links and will either utilize them or pass them along. We will likely wind up at the Lee County range there.

A lot of the less expensive modifications can be done at their leisure. My main focus right now is getting a great rifle in their hands, ready to shoot. The stock, red dot scope, and extra magazines all wrapped up in a nice Ruger case will have to suffice for now...... so I can have enough left over for gas money

Thanks again for all the great suggestions. Since both young men are pretty handy I expect they'll be tinkering with their "gift" for weeks to come.

Good luck on your trip CP. Your boys will remember this for the rest of their lives. I have a .22 lever action that belonged to my dad when he was a teen that he passed on to me one year and my first 1911 that he bought me as a graduation gift, and I will never get rid of either of them no matter how bad things get. Great choice for building memories!!

The best high-cap mags, due to the fact that you can disassemble them for cleaning, adjust them to feed reliably, and replace the feed lips if needed.
I own most brands of high-cap mags (BC Hot Lips, Steel Lips, Eagle 30 round and TI), and I wouldn't buy anything but the TI composites in the future.
Ruger 10 rounders are good, too, if they don't have an interest in high-cap mags.

I would go with the Hogue stocks for sure, love mine.

Yes use BLUE LocTite, I recently had an issue with one screw that had been sealed with RED! It took some effort, heat, tapping, but I think using the correct combination of swear words, broke it loose.

I love the Appleseed idea also, make sure you go with them also, cause you would enjoy it and with the boys it would be even better!

Besides that, any ammo you could give them would be in itself a great gift.

The other day I popped into a Longs Drug store for a box of .22 mags for my S&W pistol. They wanted $15. for a box of 20. Walked away laughing, week before I payed $9. at Cabelas.

UPDATE : I have the rifles outfitted with red dot scopes, both in sharp-looking Ruger 10/22 padded cases, extra factory magazines + 25-round steel lip mags, and a half-dozen bricks of ammo for each.

Tucked away inside each gun case is a copy of The Great One's "Liberty and Tyranny" for their consumption.

I have located a nice outdoor range near Punta Gorda and verified they'll be open the day after Christmas, so we can spend the 26th shooting all afternoon ! Both young men are slobbering to shoot my new Tactical Mini, but they have no idea this is coming - I can barely contain my glee

We'll have a very special Christmas in Florida with our (grown) sons, spend a day at the range, then go out to dinner the evening of the 26th to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary.

As an aside, on our 25th wedding anniversary, these fellows took us out for a splendid seafood dinner and presented us with matching his-n-hers Movado watches, so I figure they got this coming..... good kids, both.

Yeah, we've already had that discussion. When I emailed them a photo of the new Mini 14, my eldest son said his brother yelled "Dibbs!"

They know they'll be sharing my small collection once I'm gone...... gives me an excuse to "round out" the collection with more guns so there will be plenty to go around.

That's the range we go to also. It's real nice, about a mile east on Tucker's Grade off I-75. Cost is just 6$ per car load. They've got 7 & 50 yd. pistol ranges, 50, 100 & 200 yd. rifle ranges and shotgun ranges if you want to shoot some clays. The whole place is monitored by park rangers to make sure that it stays safe. Beyond the usual safety rules, there really aren't any restrictions. You can shoot as much and as fast as you want.

The weather should be perfect on the day after Christmas. I would say to get there early as close to sun-up as possible. The place fills up quickly and there will be a lot of folks out trying their new toys out.

WOO HOO ! Thanks for info, Snake Driver.... that's just what I was hoping to hear. $6 a carload is certainly reasonable. I think the wife and I came very close to this when we toured the Babcock area last year.

If you have no other plans, perhaps you'd like to come out and throw some lead down-range ? Either way, I appreciate the details provided and am looking forward to a great holiday.

The other new "tradition" is driving up to Ft. Myers beach for a couple of frosty cold Rum Runners - that's what I'm talking about !

I have a .22 lever action that belonged to my dad when he was a teen that he passed on to me one year and my first 1911 that he bought me as a graduation gift, and I will never get rid of either of them no matter how bad things get. Great choice for building memories!!

Yes use BLUE LocTite, I recently had an issue with one screw that had been sealed with RED! It took some effort, heat, tapping, but I think using the correct combination of swear words, broke it loose. I love the Appleseed idea also, make sure you go with them also, cause you would enjoy it and with the boys it would be even better! Besides that, any ammo you could give them would be in itself a great gift. The other day I popped into a Longs Drug store for a box of .22 mags for my S&W pistol. They wanted $15. for a box of 20.
