Mini-14 receiver timed thread?
Anyone know of the Mini-14 receiver has a timed thread. I am thinking about turing my own barrel with splines cut for the M14 flash hider and am curious if the mini has a timed thread.

I'll through out a couple of ideas on the question. Looking at my Ranch barrel, there is a small flat at the receiver end of the barrel, which could only be cut before assembly. Probably a timing mark for alignment and indexing. So, I'd say, as an observation, yes, it has a timed thread on the barrel.
But, if you were going to machine the barrel from scratch, the hole for the gas port might be able to be added after threading into the receiver. But the splines and threads still need to be cut on the muzzle. A flash hider from a M-14 can be fitted onto a Mini without using splines; others have done it. If you have the skills to cut a barrel, it should be something you can handle. IE: machine the M-14 FH and barrel to match diameters, and hold the FH in place with a pair of setscrews. Bore out the threads of the castle nut, blind, also held in place with a setscrew. Would look just like the M-14 setup. Also, have you ever seen photos of a Mini which has been fitted with a gas system from a M-1 Garand? It put the barrel gas port directly behind the flash hider, and the rifle has much better gas system timing as a result. Neat idea, and it seemed to work well. But it's a lot of hard work. |

I'm actually toying with the idea of using an M14 gas system as well. I've converted the AR-15 to use an inverted M14 gas piston in the past. This little rifle is fun to tinker with.
A timed receiver thread would make barrel turning easier, getting the gas system and flash hider threads all timed right. |

The guy you would want to talk to is Kevin Wyatt down in Medford, Oregon. He adapted the M14 gas system to a mini 30 I have seen. It was many years ago, but Kevin is still at it, building rifles, just not mini's anymore. He gave up on the mini because the specs were too inconsistent from mini to mini. He had converted the mini 30 I saw from 7.62x39 to 30BR Remington. That mini basically shot 1 hole groups at 100 yards, with the occasional flyer. The occasional flyer was why he dropped the mini project, he couldn't eliminate it. You can't win shooting matches with that kind of accuracy.
